Saving on Council Tax on Your Property

Every property placed in a council tax band needs to pay council tax. Councils use these taxes to carry out their services, including maintenance and cleaning of the road. However, residents are exempt from paying the due in specific cases. It all depends on who lives on the property or how you are using it.

You may apply for reduced council tax if you are a full-time student or living with students. If you provide care in your property or live with individuals in certain circumstances, such as old age, illness, disability, or drug dependence, you may qualify for a reduction in your council tax. Properties are exempt if all the people.

Council tax bills count individuals occupying the property as their primary dwellings are adults. If only one adult lives there, they can benefit from the single person discount by paying a reduced bill by 25 percent. Councils do not count some people as the second residence for the tax bill, even if they reside in the property. They are disregarded persons and can help you save a twenty-five percent discount, and in some cases, fifty percent discount on council tax.

Disregarded people include a young person studying for a recognized qualification. A student nurse who studies in a hostel or night shelter and provides up to 35 hours of care a week is also a disregarded person. If your property is an annex, it is subject to a separate council tax bill. If you have rented out this annex to your relative, you may get a fifty percent discount.

However, there is no council tax if the person living in your annexe is your dependent. Likewise, many situations better depict how to avoid paying council tax on an empty property. The property does not have council tax when its owner is in jail or the hospital.
